The Liquid Gold Project

The “Liquid Gold Project” is a foundation that Donald Pierini, (a Birmingham business man who survived leukemia through treatment and platelet transfusions) started this year. LifeSouth is partnering with him to get this foundation started in Alabama to raise awareness and platelet collections. If successful, the foundation will then be operative nationally.

Mr. Pierini was a patient at SVH just 3 years ago desperately awaiting platelet transfusions. His platelet count had dropped to 5,000 (normal is 150,000-400,000). He was bleeding from his gums and the palms of his hands. He was dying and he knew it. Miraculously, a platelet product arrived at SVH and he got the transfusion. He explained that as he was receiving this lifesaving transfusion, he was watching the news. One of the stories was about a 19 year old female who has just died at UAB awaiting a platelet transfusion. This upset Mr. Pierini terribly because he received platelets and she did not. He couldn’t understand why there was such a shortage and why his life was spared and hers wasn’t. He explained and I quote, “I immediately made a deal with the BIG MAN upstairs that if I got out of that hospital bed, I would make it my goal to increase both awareness and the actual platelet donations. This would ensure that no other person would die waiting on a platelet transfusion.”
